French Midfielder Matuidi Prefers Liverpool Over Gunners

Liverpool have been boosted in a potential race for Blaise Matuidi. The French international midfielder currently plies his trade with Saint-Etienne, but media speculation has linked the player with a move away from the Ligue 1 outfit this January. Juventus are believed to have shown an interest in the player, but Matuidi is only interested in a move to England. "It is nice to know a club like Juventus is following you or asking about you," said Matuidi. "But the league that would suit me best is the Premier League. This is due to tactical, cultural and physical reasons, and the atmosphere in the stadiums." The 23-year-old joined Les Verts in 2007 after three years with current Ligue 2 side Troyes. He has also represented Les Bleus at several levels, and made his senior international debut against Bosnia in September of this year. Liverpool were first linked with Matuidi back in 2009, as were Arsenal, who sent Giles Grimandi to scout the player a few seasons back. The Gunners are thought to be favourites for the player, but Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is keen to strengthen his midfield when the transfer window re- opens and could challenge Arsene Wenger for the player's signature. Interest from the bianconeri has forced both Liverpool and Arsenal to consider their options with regards to moves for the player, and both sides are preparing to go head-to-head after funds were made available at both Anfield and the Emirates. Liverpool appear to be back-on- track after yesterday's (Sunday) victory against Bolton, and will be looking to re-ignite their challenge for European places. Arsenal are challenging for trophies on several fronts this season, and both will see the player acquisition as a major coup if either can land Matuidi in 2011.
