Thompson: Carragher Deserves Testimonial

Phil Thompson has spoken of
his admiration for Jamie
Carragher and believes there is
no-one more deserving of a
testimonial than Liverpool's
No.23.
Bootle's finest stages his big
match against Everton at Anfield
on Saturday and Thompson said
it is a chance for the Kop to
salute a Scouse hero.
"Carra has been a magnificent
servant for the club and he will
go down as a true legend in the
game," said Thompson.
"He's one of our own. A lad who
crossed the divide from being an
Evertonian to a Liverpudlian.

"Everyone knows his passion and
commitment. He's had some
difficult times over the years with
injuries and having to play at full-
back, but he's come through.
"His drive and focus is
remarkable but he can play too.
He's a great defender who reads
the game so well."
Thompson also believes
Carragher is up there with the
greats that have graced the red
shirt over the years.
"The biggest compliment I can
pay Carra is that he could span
every generation going back to
Bill Shankly's side of the Sixties,"
he added.
"He could have played in the
great Liverpool teams of the '60s,
'70s or '80s.
"And what stands him apart is
that he's been a true
ambassador not only for the club
but also for our city.
"Long after he has finished
playing people will remember
Carra for everything he's done.
He has always remained true to
his roots.
"All proceeds on Saturday go to
the 23 Foundation, which will
help not just Liverpool fans but
all of Merseyside. That's typical of
the guy."
