Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has issued his congratulations to Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina after Spain’s World Cup Final victory over Holland on Sunday night.
The Reds pair were part of the Spain squad to lift the World Cup in South Africa after Andres Iniesta’s extra time goal defeated the Dutch.
Hodgson also issued his commiserations to Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel, part of the Holland squad.
During the post-match celebrations, Torres was pictured wearing a Liverpool scarf whilst holding the World Cup – a photograph that went viral on the internet and certainly gave Reds fans confidence that the striker will stay at Anfield amid rumours linking him with a big money move to Chelsea.
Hodgson said, “As Liverpool manager, I take great pride in the fact that two of our players can call themselves World Cup winners this summer.
“I think it’s safe to say the pictures of Fernando in the dressing room with the World Cup certainly went down well with our fans but the club can be proud of all the players who went away to the World Cup. To have four players reach the final is an incredible achievement and I look forward to working with them when they return to Melwood after their holidays.”
Torres was later pictured wearing an Atletico Madrid scarf, his former club, when celebrating with his international teammates in Madrid.
Liverpool’s medical team are expected in the Spanish capital today to assess the extent of Torres’ latest injury scare, picked up in the closing moments of the final.
