Sir Alex Ferguson has lashed out
at the media reaction regarding
comments he made about
Fernando Torres after
Manchester United's 3-2 victory
over Liverpool last Sunday.
Reports the following day had
suggested that Ferguson had
labelled the Spanish striker a
cheat after the former Atletico
Madrid star won a free-kick
which led to Steven Gerrard ’s
equaliser.
After the game Ferguson had
said that Torres had “made a
meal” of John O’Shea’s challenge
and in doing so had attempted
to get the United defender sent
off in the process.
Ferguson also expressed his
disappointment that the next
day ’s headlines were dominated
with his comments over Torres,
rather than focusing on hat-trick
hero Dimitar Berbatov. The
Bulgarian produced one of his
most inspiring performances in a
United shirt since his multi-
million pound switch from
Tottenham.
"If you think about Berbatov
scoring a hat-trick - the first to
score a hat-trick in 64 years in
that game, you'd have thought
that would get the back-page
headlines, but that was stuck on
the inside,” Ferguson said to
MUTV.
"It was all me saying Torres was
a cheat, which was absolutely
ridiculous press. I said, quite
rightly, that I thought he had
made the most of it. That's not to
say the guy's a cheat. It could
apply to any player in a given
moment, taking advantage of a
situation.
"But that was disappointing
[from] a lot of the press. I
thought Berbatov would have
grabbed all the headlines, which
he really did deserve."
