Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush has said utility players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will leave Anfield if the team fails to clinch a Champions League spot next season.
Rush, who is currently in Nairobi, Kenya for a Liverpool coaching clinic, which is sponsored by the Standard Chartered Bank, told the Daily Nation that the duo are unlikely to tolerate more than a year out of Europe’s top league.
“It’s four years since they won anything. Players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher don’t want to be part of a team that doesn’t win, neither does any other top player in the club,” Rush said.
“They’ve always wanted to win the league. Players like Gerrard and Fernando Torres will stay another season, but if the same thing happened next season, that’s when they’d start to look around for somewhere else.”
Rush also said the club, which has already added Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen and Milan Jovanovic among others in their ranks, needs more additions.
“It goes without saying that Liverpool need new players. Fernando Torres has suggested that at least four players are required and I certainly agree with that. What’s more, the Reds have got to keep their top performers at Anfield too,” says the football star.
“But after watching the Arsenal versus Liverpool match last week, I’m sure the team is destined for greater heights.”
The Anfield scoring hero couldn’t hide his excitement with Joe Cole’s arrival and backed Liverpool to race back to the top four after last season’s seventh-placed finish.
“I think it's fantastic news for the club,” says Rush.
