ManCity Set To Test New Liverpool Owners With Mega Torres Bid

ONE of John Henry's first acts as new Liverpool owner will be to try and fend off a bid for Fernando Torres. The Boston Red Sox owner, whose New England Sports Ventures investment company have provisionally bought the Anfield outfit, will be hoping to persuade the club 's top players that they can still match their ambitions. However, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is planning an audacious swoop for Torres during the January transfer window. Despite Torres quashing summer speculation than he was ready to quit Anfield, declaring that he was still committed to the club, the Spanish striker has cut a forlorn figure on several occasions this season with both his lacklustre performances and body language criticised by some former Liverpool players. With Liverpool already facing an uphill struggle to avoid missing out on Champions League qualification for the second consecutive season, Mancini is hoping to convince Torres that along with a more lucrative contract, his chances of winning a trophy are now greater at Eastlands. The former Inter coach has been told by City 's owners that if his team are still challenging for the title at the turn of the year then they will fund the marquee signing.
