Liverpool legend Phil Thompson
has blasted Manchester United
manager Sir Alex Ferguson for
his comments in the aftermath of
their Premier League encounter
on Sunday.
Having seen his side beat their
arch rivals 3-2 at Old Trafford,
Ferguson suggested Liverpool
forward Fernando Torres had
dived to earn a free-kick on the
edge of the box that resulted in
Steven Gerrard’s equaliser.
Thompson believes the
Manchester United manager’s
comments were both
“ ridiculous” and deliberately
inflammatory in an effort to
exasperate Liverpool ’s current
plight.
Thompson told the Liverpool
Echo: “Roy Hodgson kept a
dignified silence and didn’t rise
to the bait but some of Alex
Ferguson ’s comments after our
defeat at Old Trafford were
ridiculous.
“Ferguson embarrassed himself
with some of the rubbish he
came out with. For starters he
accused Fernando Torres of
trying to get John O ’Shea sent off.
“It was disgraceful to point the
finger at an opposing player like
that and he seemed to
conveniently forget that his own
player Nani was throwing
himself around all afternoon like
he was auditioning for a part in
Coronation Street.
“Ferguson also claimed United
deserved to win by a much
greater margin and described
the defeat for Liverpool as “a
catastrophe”.
“What utter tosh.
“Liverpool Football Club is going
through some hard times and
this was Ferguson baiting the
club and trying to rub our noses
in it.
Thompson concluded: “Ferguson
should have more respect for
Liverpool than that. ”
