Reports in Spain suggest that a deal has been struck between Liverpool and FC Barcelona for Javier Mascherano to move to Camp Nou.
The fee quoted is €16m which seems a paltry amount for the captain of Argentina especially as he still has two years left on his contract at Anfield.
As mentioned above, these are just reports and given the nature of the press in Spain where papers are routinely used as mouthpieces for the big clubs – AS and Marca for Real Madrid and Sport for Barcelona – it is hard to know at this stage how much truth can be attributed to these rumours.
If accurate, the figure mentioned will dismay many at Anfield though it will release some funds for another foray into the transfer market before the window closes.
