Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson says any new owners of the club must convince the fans that they are buying the club for the right reasons in order for a successful future.
It has been highly publicised that many Liverpool fans have not agreed with the tenure of current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks since they purchased the club in 2007.
But with speculation abound that the club will be sold shortly to a wealthy foreign business group, Hodgson has urged caution on the potential new owners.
“I think it’s not a question of me or players if a new owner comes in,” he said.
“It’s very important that he makes it clear to the people of Liverpool – because Liverpool is an institution certainly in this town, this country and worldwide.
“We have fans worldwide and I think that the new owners whoever they are, if they materialise, it would be incumbent upon them really to make it clear to the people who love this football club that they’re buying it for the right reasons.
“They’re buying it because they want to maintain the level that the fans have been used to over the last 20, 30, 40 years and will do their best to make sure that we don’t drop from the perch which we’ve set very, very high up.
“That’d be what I’d like to hear from the new owners but of course I would just be an employee of their club.”
