Steven Gerrard believes that new Liverpool team mate Joe Cole can match Barcelona's Lionel Messi.
The England international's trickery and flair was clear for all to see during last week's Europa League win over FK Rabotnicki as he offered a glimpse of what he will offer Roy Hodgson's side in the forthcoming campaign.
In an interview with Match of the Day magazine Gerrard, 30, has hailed Cole as having the abilities to surpass current FIFA World Player of the Year Messi, who netted 47 times for Barcelona last season, following his arrival at Anfield last month.
"Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better," he said.
"He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [Player of the Season] award this season."
Gerrard's future was clouded in uncertainty this summer following last season's dismal seventh-place finish which led to Rafael Benitez's departure as Reds manager.
But the Liverpool captain revealed that he was impressed with Hodgson's vision for the club and has called on his team mates to help banish the 'horror' of failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2003.
He added: "It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club.
"It's a new era now – we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."
