Joe Cole has told new team-mate Fernando Torres that together they can win honours at Anfield.
After two days of talks with Liverpool MD Christian Purslow, the star Spanish striker has offered the biggest indication yet that he is ready to commit his future to the Reds, following months of unsettling speculation.
And new signing Cole is convinced that if the classy centre forward stays, then his team will have the world class quality to challenge for the titles that Torres has insisted he wants in his career.
“I came here to work hard and challenge for honours with Liverpool, and with the players we have got then it is possible,” Cole said.
“Just look at the team we have got already. Fernando is as good as anyone in the world in his position, and the same applies to Stevie Gerrard in his position. Then you have got Pepe Reina who is up at the very top, and Jamie Carragher, who has been one of the best there is for a long time.
“There are Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt who had great World Cups, and so many other top international names that roll off the tongue.
“If we can keep players fit, then we can play well together. It’s all about us being together as a team and having the spirit which can take you a long way.
“If you add that to the quality players we’ve got here we can go a long way – I believe with the world class players we have we can do great things.”
Torres is the key to Liverpool’s immediate future, and it seems as though he will now stay, despite a continuing interest from Chelsea.
Barcelona were also keen to land the Spaniard, but they have been hit by a financial crisis that has curtailed their summer spending.
And with Torres promised more signings to add to the spectacular impact already made by the capture of Cole, then he looks certain to give Liverpool at least another year to improve on last season’s dismal failure.
Purslow has spent the past few days talking with the striker, and new boss Hodgson has also held encouraging talks with the forward.
The Reds manager knows that he must continue to improve his squad to show the Liverpool icon that it is not all doom and gloom around Anfield.
And while he knows it will not be easy to turn things around, Hodgson believes it is possible, given the right signings.
“There’s a lot more work to do and a lot more players needed, and we have to doing everything we can to use the money we have as sensibly and as intelligently as possible to bring them in,” he said.
