Hodgson To Go For Konchesky And Figueroa To Replace Insua

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is looking for new left backs after the club saw both Fabio Aurelio and Emilio Insua leave this summer, with the former released from his contract while the Argentinian will soon seal a move to Serie A club Fiorentina. The former Fulham coach is now lining up Craven Cottage defender Paul Konchesky and Wigan left back Maynor Figueroa as possible new additions to the team before the new Premier League season. “We are short (at left back) and that is going to be one of the priorities. We need to find a replacement for Emiliano and Fabio. That is one job we will have to do,” Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv.
“As far as we understand, the deal (for Insua) has been completed between the clubs and his agent is sorting out personal terms. Maybe it was the right time for him to move on.”
Former England international Konchesky enjoyed a stellar season under Hodgson last season, playing a pivotal part in the team that reached the Europa League final while finishing well in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has only one more year left to run on his current contract and is seeking a move to a new club, and a reunion with his former boss at Anfield would be an attractive proposition.
Liverpool will have to face competition for Konchesky’s signature from Birmingham City, who have already had a £1.5 million bid turned down by Fulham earlier this summer. An offer of £2 million is expected to be tabled by the Merseysiders for the defender who has also previously turned out for Charlton Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.
Meanwhile, the Reds are still pursuing their interest in Wigan defender Figueroa, who became one of Hodgson’s prime transfer targets since his appointment as new Liverpool manager earlier this month.
