Palermo Still Hopeful Of Signing Lucas

Palermo have not given up hope of securing a move for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Last month the Rosanero tabled a bid of £5million for the Brazil international, 23, but saw their bid rejected outright by Reds chiefs, who have no intention of selling him.

Roy Hodgson has been largely impressed from what he has seen of Lucas in his first month as Liverpool manager and felt strongly enough to allow him to captain the side that beat FK Rabotnicki in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie last Thursday.

Lucas has insisted that he is happy at Anfield but Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini still believes that a deal can be brokered despite remaining tight-lipped on the Serie A outfit's plans to accelerate their pursuit of him.

He said: "Leiva is a very strong player and I like him very much.

"But to speak of a deal already is not accurate.

"We have to wait. I cannot say any more."
