The Danish midfielder is in a similar mould to Hamann in his heyday.
"He's a very good holding midfielder who did really well during his time in Germany and Spain," Hamann told liverpoolfc.tv.
"He didn't have the best of times at Juventus but he's a very clever player. He keeps the team ticking over and is a very good passer of the ball.
"I think the club should have signed him a couple of years ago, but he's here now and he's only 30 so he's got a few good years left in him.
"He'll be a great addition to the squad and is another option in that midfield."
