Torres Sweats Over Injury

Fernando Torres is awaiting news of a groin injury sustained during the World Cup final, with Chelsea also sweating on the result of the scan.

The Liverpool striker pulled up running for the ball, moments after he had played a part in the build up to Andres Iniesta's winning goal against Holland in Johannesburg's Soccer City.

Having begun the final as a substitute and only coming on for the final 15 minutes of extra time, the Spanish striker sustained an injury that left him in tears as he was stretchered off.

However, Torres took part in Spain's celebrations (with a Liverpool scarf over his shoulders!) and was able to leave the stadium unaided.

The former Atletico Madrid star's latest injury means that his potential move to Chelsea this summer could be in jeopardy.

Chelsea are thought likely to offer £50 million for Torres, which falls some £20m short of Liverpool's valuation of the 27-year-old.

Liverpool are hoping to sign Edin Dzeko, also a reported target for Manchester City, should Torres leave.

Barcelona striker and fellow World Cup winner David Villa is convinced that Torres would join Chelsea over Manchester City.

"I am not sure where his future lies, but he knows like me he must win trophies at club level," he said.

"He isn't money-focused so he would never join Manchester City.

"But sure, Barcelona and Chelsea would be real options for him. He has proven he can score goals in England and Chelsea are the number one team there at the moment, so I suppose it's the option that makes the most sense.

"He has been fully focused on the World Cup but in the back of his mind he knows he needs to be competing for the very highest honours and if Liverpool can't do it he will have to move."
