Signed by former Reds boss Rafa Benitez, Plessis has made just three Barclays Premier League appearances in as many seasons, scoring once in a total of eight matches.
Big things were expected of the France Under 21 international when he was snared from then French champions Lyon in 2007, but he has failed to turn his impressive reserve performances into first-team opportunities.
