Liverpool Reject Palermo Bid For Lucas Leiva

Liverpool have rejected an initial £5million offer for Lucas Leiva from Palermo.

Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing but the Serie A outfit are understood to be refusing to budge in meeting Liverpool's £8million asking price for the Brazilian midfielder.

The 23-year-old made 50 appearances last season for the club and had been heavily tipped to follow former manager Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan, which prompted Reds chiefs to increase their valuation.

Former Wigan Athletic midfielder Paul Scharner, currently a free agent, has been touted as his potential replacement but is thought to be Roy Hodgson's first port of call to succeed Javier Mascherano, should the Argentina captain leave Anfield.

Barcelona are still interested in the 26-year-old despite their financial travails but European champions Inter remain firm favourites to win the race for his signature.
