Aldridge: Gilett And Hicks "Suffocated" Liverpool

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has claimed George Gillett and Tom Hicks' ownership is 'suffocating' the club.

The Americans have saddled the Reds with debts of over £351million since their takeover in 2007 and are hemorrhaging £110,000 per day in interest payments to the Royal Bank of Scotland

Aldridge, who played for his boyhood club between 1987 and 1989, used his speech at an Independence Day rally in Liverpool city centre yesterday to again hit out at the duo for failing to make good on pledges to leave the club debt-free and build a new stadium in Stanley Park.

"Here we are now, looking at the demise of one of the greatest football clubs in the world," he said.

"The reason being the two owners: Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett, who for three years have gave us false promises, no stadium and are just full of greed.

"They're now suffocating our great club with the debt which is £110,000 every day going down the grid.

"On Independence Day while they're having their roast dinner, champagne and caviar, our club's losing £110,000. I just can't believe it.

"We're losing our way to the likes of United, Arsenal and Chelsea with every day that goes by."

Speaking at St George's Plateau as part of the event organised by supporters union Spirit of Shankly, Aldridge, also backed plans for a takeover bid which could potentially see Liverpool become the first English club to be fan-owned.

He added: "Supporter ownership won't happen overnight and there are sceptics out there, even amongst my fellow ex-professionals, but if you just sit at home on your arse and do nothing then nothing gets done. Let's try and be positive.
